THREE GUYS IN HEATED DISCUSSION…

"Five bucks says it was Holly Hunter who won for Best Supporting Actress in '93."

"You're nuts! It was that Tomai girl — Marisa or something like that. Kiss your five goodbye pal."

"You're both soooo wrong! It was Anna Paquin for The Piano — and the Oscar® is for 'best performance by an actress in a supporting role' — not 'Best Supporting Actress' — get in right for Pete's sake! I'm in for five and let's get down to the library and settle this — bring your money suckers!"

As a librarian, you may be asked to arbitrate this vital three-way dispute. Here is the official LM&PR three-step procedure for doing so:

  1. Politely decline involvement in the financial aspects of the transaction. Wagering is illegal in most areas and you would be well advised to distance yourself from that area of the issue. (Unless of course, you want in on the action.)
  2. Poll the parties involved and ascertain the specifics each individuals position. Each disparate hypothesis must be clearly stated in order to properly, completely, and accurately test that hypothesis.
  3. Log-on to the official Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Oscar ® Website at http://www.oscar.com and drill down to " Oscar History." From there you can search all categories and find all of the nominees and winners back to 1927.

With regard to the cited issue, the third guy takes home the three "Abe Lincolns."
