National Volunteer Week Is Here!National Volunteer Week for 2003 takes place between April 27 and May 3. This is your opportunity to show your volunteers a bit of appreciation for their service and to encourage new people to volunteer in support of your library. This annual event, established in 1974 by Presidential Order, is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network and has become recognized as the official time to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers at the local, state and national levels. Your celebration can be huge, tiny, or anything in between. Even something as simple as a special bookmark or a plate of cookies can do wonders for the spirits of your hard-working volunteers. Governors, mayors and other elected officials will make public statements and sign proclamations in support of National Volunteer Week so you may as well hitch a ride on all that buzz to help support and grow your band of volunteers. Unable to contain ourselves in the face of such wonders we have put together our own contribution (in Acrobat format) including color bookmarks (volunteer_bkmk_color.pdf — 95KB) for color printers, black and white bookmarks (volunteer_bkmk_black.pdf — 95KB) for copiers and we have also included an on-topic, six-page, volunteer tipsheet from FRIENDS & FOUNDATIONS of California Libraries (volunteer_tipsheet.pdf — 589KB). Get everything and if you don't use it this year you can save it for the future. Next year's National Volunteer Week takes place between April 18 and 24 and it all happens again in 2005 between April 17 and 23. |
